NEW DELHI: A vermilion mark on their forehead or a turban around their head doesn't prevent them from visiting the church. The crowd at Sacred Heart Cathedral Church, Gole Market, on Christmas eve crossed all barriers.
The wintry chill befitting a Christmas eve had started setting in but that no deterrent to the stream of people heading for the cathedral.

The otherwise silent corner of the Gole Dak Khana roundabout, where the cathedral is located, was evidently abuzz with hawkers and peddlers. And amidst Santa caps, jewellery, balloons, barricades and cops came the crowd.
Lighting candles, Kamaljeet Singh said: "I might be a Sikh, but religion is peace an d it knows no boundaries that is the richness of our country."
This Christmas, a fair, Chris Fiesta, had been organised by a youth group, Yuvodaya, to raise fund for causes like moral education, career counselling and personality development.
"It is an eatable-stall mela with an exhibition on Christ's life and the relevance of his teachings in the world today," said Father Ignatius Mascarenhas.
With the waiting hours stretching up to two hours on Christmas, the church had more than a lakh people visiting it. "The midnight mass here sees a crowd of more than 4,000. They wait for hours to touch the holy steps and reach the crib," added Father Mascarenhas.

On the rising trend of people from all religions visiting the church, he added: "Calamities like Tsunami, Katrina and earthquake have brought people together.
They seek harmony. Earlier we had only Christians coming here to say their prayers. But since the past two-three years, the number of people of other religions visiting the church has gone up by four to five times."
For Raju, a twelve-year-old selling candles outside, Christmas is "business. It's only a matter of these two days when we can make extra money. It does not matter to me who is buying them."
